Sometimes the only way to get a workout in as a mom is to bring your kids along for the adventure. Am I right, or am I right? And even if you belong to a gym with a daycare, it’s no guarantee you’ll get a full workout in. The fallback? Working out at home. And On-the-Move Munchkins helps you do just that.
From the creator of Prego-fit & Fabulous and Mega-fit Momma, Jillian Moriarty’s On-the-Move Munchkins is a kid-centered workout that helps both parents and kids get some activity going in their day. The two workouts on the DVD encourage both you and your little ones to get off the couch and get moving, and I love that it helps parents be good role models for kids.
With a mix of easy cardio, Pilates- and yoga-inspired moves and general silliness with songs, rhymes and dancing, the workout probably won’t be the toughest you’ve ever done, but it will give you ideas on exercises you can do with your kids. Many of the exercises are kid-friendly—what kid under 10 won’t happily imitate a frog?—and there is time for free play built in as well (also known as: your kid will wonder off and that’s okay). Sure, you’ll feel super dorky doing some of this DVD, but parents get used to being dorky all for the sake of their kids’ fun and laughs.
I tested the DVD out with my daughter and my neighbor kids, and the kids all loved watching the other children play on the screen. Some parts were definitely bigger hits than others (see: frog jumping vs. deep breathing), but I do love that there are kids of all age ranges on the DVD and moves are modified for age appropriateness.
One thing that bugged me about the DVD was that there are both the simplest moves, like marching in place, and pretty advanced moves included, like crow pose. It helps to be familiar with some yoga basics if you’re going to go for any of the complicated ones, but common sense tells you to just work to your ability.
FBG Rating (Out of 5):
Fun Factor: ★★★
Meets Expectations: ★★
Fit Bottom Line: On-the-Move Munchkins may not be the ticket to getting in the best shape of your life, but it will certainly give you ideas on how to incorporate babies and kiddos into your at-home workout routine and get everyone off the couch!
