I must be in need of a little R&R lately because I have definitely been drawn to the more relaxing yoga-esque postpartum workout DVDs. (I must be getting enough cardio chasing after my more mobile daughter.) And Mega-fit Momma was right up my relaxation alley.
Both a prenatal and postpartum workout, instructor Jillian Moriarty makes you feel comfortable, with her goofy sense of humor, physical-therapy expertise and the fact that she’s in her second trimester and her workout partner is in her third (and does additional modifications). Jillian also specifies that there are no controversial moves in the workout, so you don’t have to worry about lying on your back or doing any headstands here.
The workout focuses mostly on stretching and Pilates-based moves. A few of the stretches felt simply amazing, so I know pregnant mamas will really enjoy these, too. Planks and lunges are the more challenging exercises of the DVD, along with some balance-challenging moves that are sure to challenge that pregnancy clumsiness. Jillian incorporates gliding discs, which pose an added challenge and a bit of a cardio element as well. Overall, you’re not going to find a super-challenging session here, but you will find a lot of body TLC if you’re pregnant or newly postpartum. I do also love the bit of love she gives to the ankles and toes in the form of ankle rolls and toe stretches—we know they need some love during pregnancy!
The workout focuses a lot on breathing and that “Pilates breath,” which you’ll really notice because there is no music in the DVD. I would have preferred some background tunes, but I guess it’s a clean slate for those who’d rather put on their own tunes!
