As I sit inside, all bundled up, with freshly fallen snow on the ground outside, I find myself fantasizing about warmer weather and the fun things the fam and I can do when everything thaws in the spring and summer. I can’t wait to get the kiddie pool out and splash around. Or watch my daughter toddle around in a sprinkler. And my imagination isn’t even stopping at summer fun—I find myself fantasizing about some of the things I’ll be able to do once I get my mobility back! 5 Fun Fitness Getaways
1. Hit the ice. Or the snow. As long as you’ve got stable walkers in the family, winter sports are a great way to get active together as a family. Whether it’s hitting the local ice rink on the cheap or shelling out the big bucks for a trip to the slopes (and the gear required), both activities will get the family sweating and laughing together. Personally, I can’t wait to get my daughter on skis. My hubby and I have gone two years now without hitting the slopes, and we’re both ready to get back out there. Maybe next year?
2. Zip it! I loved my family-friendly hiking trip to Ohio over the summer, but I failed to mention one awesome adventure: the zipline! In addition to the more intense 3-hour+ ziplining experience offered, the place we went had a 1-hour kid-friendly tour. My daughter was too young, but my 3-year-old niece and 6-year-old nephew had a blast on the obstacles and zipline. And so did the adults!
3. Splash it up. When you can’t get outside because it’s freezing, doesn’t an indoor water park sound fun? Sliding down slides with your kiddos, splashing around in warm water…you’ll burn calories as a family and have a serious blast.
4. The links. Golf breaks or even mini-golf can be a really fun family fitness activity. I remember walking the golf course with my dad when he was in one of his golf-addicted stages—and as a kid, I never even realized I was getting exercise doing it! And mini-golf? What kid doesn’t love jumping around on hilly greens or putting a ball through the mouth of an alligator? You can even find indoor mini-golf locations, perfect when it’s too cold to get outside.
5. Amusement park. Another warm-weather one, but one that’s worth waiting for! Do you know how many cals you can burn at an amusement park all day? Me neither, but I do know they’re exhausting and a lot of walking is involved! Just try not to scarf down too many pieces of pizza or ice cream cones while you’re there!
